y'know, for the life of me, i can't fathom why they didn't go theatrical with this....with it's built-in audience and residual 'hairspray' goodwill, i think it would have killed at the box office...they could have slapped a 'disney channel / buena vista' banner on it (a la nickelodeon/paramount) and booked space way back when 'hsm1' was turning in record numbers..... i was told at tca that 'hsm3' will go to theaters but that seems short-sighted and a tad too late.......any thoughts? (i must be missing something...)
I don’t pretend to be privy to why and how decisions are made at Disney. But I do wonder if they reasoned that, hey, no one has ever produced a theatrical sequel to a made-for-cable movie, and, for that reason, maybe theaters might be reluctant to book it. Short-sighted? Unimaginative? Maybe. (Also, not entirely true: Love’s Abiding Joy, which received at least limited theatrical play earlier this year, is the latest in a series of films based on novels by Janette Oke and produced for the Hallmark Channel.)
i really believe there's more to it than that (just can't figure it out).....the numbers on #1 were huge and ephron's been america's sweetheart for the past nine months (not to mention over-the-top popularity for bleu, hudgins and tinsdale) ...in addition, what a great way to establish a theatrical presence fot the disney channel......hmmmmmm...it's just weird ...... anyway, nice post...nobody's picked up on the hsm2/superbad teen week-end thing yet.....
